New for 2010 – .260 Remington 139gr Lapua Scenar

In 2010 Press Releases on July 12, 2010 at 8:12 pm

The .260 Remington was originally designed as a hunting cartridge, however tactical competition shooters recognized its potential as a superior long range caliber and came to Black Hills for a specially loaded tactical version. We responded in 2009 with a special production load designed with assistance of GA Precision for their customers. The popularity of that load was so great that George Gardner at GA Precision convinced us to offer it as a catalog item for 2010. This load is notably superior to the .308 in terms of trajectory and wind performance, and even surpasses the .308 in terms of energy when ranges exceed 500 yards. Accuracy has proven to be exceptional. Velocity from a 24” barrel is 2750 fps. The .260 tactical loading will be part of the Black Hills Gold Line of ammunition. Rifles are available from GA Precision and others, including Les Baer Custom who is now producing a long range tactical rifle in this caliber.

Changes in Existing Offerings- 2010

In 2010 Press Releases on July 12, 2010 at 8:10 pm

In addition to the exciting new calibers we have added to the Black Hills Line, we have made a few changes to the bullets used in some existing calibers as part of our continuous program of upgrading our line. Changes as follows:

.40 Smith and Wesson-

We discontinued the 165 grain FMJ and replaced it with a 155 grain FMJ specially made for us by Hornady. This bullet is available in our remanufactured line only. This make a great training load for the 155 grain JHP self-defense and Police duty ammunition.

.40 Smith and Wesson-

We replaced the 155 Gr. Barnes Tac-XP with the 140 grain bullet of the same type from Barnes. The 140 grain bullet allows us to attain increased velocity at lower pressures, while maintaining the same impressive expansion, penetration and weight retention.

.243 Remington-

The 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip was replaced with the 58 grain Hornady V-MAX.

25-06 Remington-

We replaced the 100 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip with the 117 grain Hornady SST.

New for 2010 – .223 62gr TSX

In 2010 Press Releases on July 12, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Black Hills Ammunition has added a .223 load featuring the 62 grain Barnes TSX bullet. This new load joins the extensive Black Hills lineup of .223s which includes the 55 grain TSX added in 2009. The Barnes .223 TSX bullets are designed for high weight retention (typically 100%). This ammunition provides incredibly effective terminal performance. The projectile opens up immediately upon impact to over .45 caliber diameter but still penetrates deeply (approximately 20” in ballistic gelatin). Velocity is 3100 fps from a 24” barrel or 3000 fps from a 20” barrel.

The 62 grain bullet works well with twist rates of 1/7”, 1/8, or 1/9” making it suitable for currently made semi-auto rifles in this caliber. This is the optimum .223 load for use in hunting, self-defense or police patrol rifle use where a hard-hitting but deep penetrating bullet is desired. This load is as good as it gets for police situations requiring a “Barrier Blind” projectile for maintaining effectiveness through intermediate barriers. This ammunition is available in the Black Hills New Ammunition line and is not available as remanufactured ammunition.

New for 2010 – .338 Norma Magnum, 300 Grain Sierra MatchKing Bullet – Velocity 2725 fps

In 2010 Press Releases on July 12, 2010 at 8:05 pm

The .338 Norma Magnum provides essentially the same ballistics as the .338 Lapua, but in a shorter, more efficient case. The .338 Norma Magnum design avoids seating the projectile down into the powder space. This aids accuracy and efficiency. The .338 Norma has received interest from the US Military as well as extreme long range competitors. Rifles chambered for the .338 Lapua can be easily converted to .338 Norma Magnum simply by changing barrels, as the overall length and a head diameter is the same. Rifles are available from Accuracy International, GA Precision, McMillan Rifle Company and others. Long range shooters who apply their skill at ranges of 1500 yards are finding that this cartridge is one of the very best ways to hit those distant targets.
